BHMA Seeks to Boost Awareness,
Use of Certified Hardware Products

New York, NY -- Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) has launched an extensive marketing program aimed at creating industry-wide awareness of its independent third-party certification program and new certification logo.

BHMA currently sponsors third-party certification of locks and latches, door closers, exit devices, and electromagnetic delayed egress locks. In addition, the association publishes annual directories of BHMA-certified products.

In recent months, BHMA redesigned its certification logo for a more streamlined look and began promoting member usage of the logo in marketing materials and on products passing the rigorous certification program requirements. In addition, BHMA has developed a special page on its www.buildershardware.com website describing the certification program.

"Regular use and reliance on independently certified products benefit the entire construction industry by assuring product quality, performance and suitability," notes BHMA Executive Director Peter Rush. "Certification is especially important with architectural hardware, which is repeatedly subjected to exceptional movement, performance and durability demands, and often critical to building safety and security.

"By aggressively communicating the value and benefits of the BHMA’s third-party certification program, we’re hoping to both increase awareness of certified hardware and underscore the overall importance of certified products to ensuring quality in the construction industry, he added."

To obtain third-party certification, BHMA manufacturers voluntarily submit their products to independent laboratory testing -- as well as follow-up monitoring audits -- to verify that the product fully and continually conforms to its underlying ANSI/BHMA standard. Products that pass these tests and audits are permitted to carry the BHMA certification logo.

BHMA, the trade association representing manufacturers of builders hardware products, is the only U.S. organization accredited by ANSI to develop and maintain performance standards for architectural hardware.
