BHMA Announces Revisions to Standard A156.6 For Architectural Door Trim
NEW YORK, NY…The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) has published a new edition of its American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A156.6 standard for Architectural Door Trim.
According to Mike Tierney, Product Standards Coordinator for BHMA, ongoing safety concerns coupled with enhancements in materials make this category of special interest to the building industry. "Architects and specifiers continue to demand a wide range of products that perform to high standards and offer design flexibility. The changes in this standard address these specific issues," he says.
Standard A156.6 contains requirements for door protection plates, door edgings, push plates, door pulls, push bars, and pull bars. Included are strength and finish tests and dimensional and material criteria. Among the changes are additions to the materials that can be used.
In the Push/Pull Test, a deflection requirement has been added. As previously written, the various units needed to withstand 220lbf midpoint between the outermost fasteners without breakage of the unit or fasteners without specific mention of deflection. The new requirement helps ensure an added degree of safety, durability and product performance.
Tierney also notes that the standard has been reformatted and now includes improved illustrations for greater clarity and explanation of individual details.
