Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association Creates All-New Standard for Electrified Locking Devices
ANSI/BHMA Standard A156.25 Addresses Electrical Control of Door Access
NEW YORK, NY - The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) announces the new ANSI/BHMA A156.25 American National Standard for Electrified Locking Devices. This completely new, eagerly anticipated standard sets important new performance requirements for motors, solenoids and various other electrical components that are used in electrically activated locks. The mechanical components of such locks continue to be covered by the applicable pre-existing standards.
The creation of this new standard reflects the growing use of computers and electronic technology in access control. Electronic keys and remote-activation of locking systems are ubiquitous in commercial buildings yet the performance of the underlying electrical devices has been largely ungoverned by industry standards. The all-new A156.25 standard specifically applies to the electrical components of electrified locking systems. It was developed by BHMA and approved by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on January 24, 2002.
Electrified locking systems control access to doors in commercial facilities. They can greatly facilitate the management of security and safety in such buildings but the hardware components need to be reliable and effective in the application.
"This new standard applies to a fantastic number of ingenious products," said Mike Tierney, BHMA standards coordinator. "An important benefit is that it facilitates the development of improved products, methods and materials by taking the guesswork out of the performance characteristics that need to be met. It allows specifiers to adopt new technology with complete confidence."
Typical operational tests include tests for under-voltage and over-voltage operation, coil over-voltage, slam cycles and variable ambient temperatures. In addition to new performance requirements, the ANSI/BHMA standard references existing tests such as those based on UL standards that apply to electrified locking devices.
The standard includes descriptions and definitions as well as discussions of functions for various types of products that belong in the category of electrified locking devices. The tests allow manufacturers to identify and certify the type and grade of their products, including whether or not the products are suitable for outdoor use.
