Updated Standard on Mortise Locks Adds New Functions and Upgrades Performance Test Requirements
An Essential Reference for Architects, Specifiers, Contractors and Security Managers
NEW YORK, NY - The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) announces the newly revised and updated ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2002 American National Standard for Mortise Locks & Latches, Series 1000. This standard was developed by BHMA and approved by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on January 24, 2002. It includes the latest changes and revisions to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-1994.
The section on "function number and descriptions" has been expanded to include ten new functions, bringing the total to 35. Procedures are given for a variety of operational tests, security tests, cycles tests, finish tests and material evaluation tests. Examples of operational tests are dead bolt torque, torque to retract a latch-bolt by key and bolt strength. Examples of security tests are the escutcheon impact, escutcheon tension, bolt pressure and dead bolt sawing.
Other notable changes in the revised standard are the increase of the Grade 1 cycle requirement to one million cycles, inclusion of paddle and pushbutton models, and the addition of a CASS test that may be used for corrosion on vapor deposited finishes.
The standard describes 35 mortise lock functions and identifies applicable tests for each. In addition it defines key words associated with mortise locks and latches and provides improved illustrations.
