BHMA PUBLISHES REVISED STANDARD FOR
DOOR GASKETING AND EDGE SEAL SYSTEMS,
INCLUDING INTUMESCENTS; DEFINES KEY WORDS,
PERFORMANCE TESTS
ANSI/BHMA A156.22 Establishes Requirements for Performance and Installation
NEW YORK, NY — The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) announces the publication of ANSI/BHMA A156.22-2003 American National Standard for Door Gasketing and Edge Seal Systems. This updated standard establishes requirements for the performance and installation of gasketing systems applied to, or mortised to, doors or frames. For the first time, requirements and tests are described for non-intumescent materials and for intumesent materials. (Intumescents are defined as “a range of materials that expand in volume when exposed to heat or flame.”) The standard defines key words, and it describes performance tests that are intended to provide installation guidelines, resistance to smoke and air filtration, and measure the life and durability of gasketing materials.
Test procedures that apply to all gaskets include latching, adhesion, smoke infiltration, and air infiltration tests. The standard includes 19 illustrations corresponding to various types of applications. It concludes with an explanation of the numbering system, for identifying the type of gasketing.
