BHMA Publishes New Standards For
Continuous Hinges, Keying Systems

New York, NY -- Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) has developed and published two new performance standards -- one for continuous hinges (A 156.26) and one covering recommended practices for keying systems (A156.28).

With the publication of these new standards, a total of 26 ANSI/BHMA performance standards exist, covering a wide variety of architectural hardware products and systems.

Continuous Hinges

The Continuous Hinge standard establishes requirements and tests for barrel-, gear- and raised barrel-type continuous hinges, including edge and half-edge mount; surface, half-surface and half-surface 3/4-inch offset; and swing-clear configurations.

Test requirements outlined in the standard include those for the hinge play test, cycle test (graded), abuse test (graded), vertical wear test (graded), lateral wear test, overload test and finish test.

A continuous hinge is defined as a single hinge used to hang a door and having the same or nearly the same height (length) as the door.

Keying Systems

The Recommended Practices for Keying Systems standard delineates the recommended approach for selecting optimal keying systems after the cylinder type has been selected. It covers mechanical key bitting, cylinder pinning and multiplex key systems.

In addition to an extensive definitions sections, the standard includes recommended system planning procedures, including discussion points for a keying conference with the end user; master key system development, and maintenance of the building's keying system.

A useful appendix, not part of the official standard, offers guidelines and schematics for specifying master, grand master, and great grand master keying systems.

Ordering

The new ANSI/BHMA standards can be ordered in hard copy or downloaded in PDF format from BHMA's website at www.buildershardware.com. The cost for each standard is $16 hard copy, $21 for PDF. In addition, hard copies of the standards can be ordered by phoning 1-800-699-9277.
