BHMA PARTNERS WITH CSI ON EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
BHMA Sponsors Programming for the 50th Annual CSI Show & Convention

NEW YORK, NY – The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) is pleased to announce that it is partnering with the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) to sponsor educational programming for the 50th Annual CSI Show & Convention, March 28 – April 1, 2006, Las Vegas.

BHMA will sponsor the session, Substitutions – This, That or Whatever, to be conducted by Peter Jordan, AIA, CSI, CCS, NCARB, LEED AP, on Friday, March 31, 2:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. The session will review attitudes toward substitution, discuss different methods of specification and determine what constitutes a substitution.

The substitution of low quality builders hardware for certified products is a key issue for BHMA and the builders hardware community. By sponsoring this session and disseminating information on its Certification Program, BHMA aims to educate the architect and specifier community about the importance of choosing certified products that have undergone testing by an independent laboratory and have been proven to be durable and safe.

“BHMA believes that it is very important for specifiers to be educated about safety and security of products,” stated Peter Rush, BHMA Executive Director. “There are many look alike builders hardware products of poor quality that can compromise life safety. We feel that it is important for BHMA to educate architects, specifers and all concerned parties about what BHMA certification is and how our Certified Products Directory can help them do their job better.”

The BHMA Certification Program requires that products pass intensive durability, safety and performance testing performed by an independent laboratory. Once they have been certified, products are subject to additional random testing to ensure continued compliance. Specifying certified builders hardware is the only way to be sure that products used in a construction project meet the performance and safety requirements specified by the ANSI/BHMA standards. Products that have been certified may bear the “BHMA Certified” logo. For more information on the BHMA Certification Program visit www.buildershardware.com.

About BHMA

The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) is an industry leader in building safety and security. BHMA is the only organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for locks, closers, exit devices and other builders hardware. The widely known ANSI/BHMA A156 series of standards describes and establishes the features and criteria for specific types of hardware products. In addition, BHMA sponsors third-party certification of hardware products, which is a requirement for a product to bear the “BHMA Certified” mark — insuring that the product meets the ANSI/BHMA standard.
