BHMA ISSUES REVISED STANDARD FOR RELEASE DEVICES

NEW YORK, NY – The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) announces the publication of ANSI/BHMA A156.15 2006 American National Standard for Release Devices – Closer Holder, Electromagnetic and Electromechanical. This publication is an update of an earlier 2001 version of the standard.

ANSI/BHMA A156.15 covers requirements that apply to door closers combined with hold-open devices or free-swinging door closers combined with releasing devices and includes performance tests covering operational and strength criteria.

Changes made to this version of A156.15 included improving the format to make the test sequences easier to follow, as well as specific changes to the Closing Force Test and how to test Free Swinging Release Devices. This Standard is useful to architects, engineers, building owners, installation and maintenance personnel and anyone else concerned with the proper operation of release devices.

"As with all of our Standards, we had various interested parties, as well as the general public, review A156.15, giving them the opportunity to suggest changes or additions," said Mike Tierney, Standards Coordinator for the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association. "This process ensures that any updates and revisions made to our Standards are done in the interest of safety and security.”

For more information, or to purchase copies of the ANSI/BHMA A156.15-2006, please visit BHMA's web site at www.buildershardware.com. Purchased standards are available as printed documents or as electronic files (PDF) for immediate download. You can also order standards by phone by calling 800-699-9277.

About BHMA

The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) is an industry leader in building safety and security. BHMA is the only organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for locks, closers, exit devices and other builders hardware. The widely known ANSI/BHMA A156 series of standards describes and establishes the features and criteria for specific types of hardware products. In addition, BHMA sponsors third-party certification of hardware products, which is a requirement for a product to bear the “BHMA Certified” mark — insuring that the product meets the ANSI/BHMA standard.
