BHMA ISSUES REVISED STANDARDS FOR BUTTS AND HINGES, AND CONTINUOUS HINGES
NEW YORK, NY (December 2006) – The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) announces the revised publication of ANSI/BHMA A156.1 2006 American National Standard for Butts and Hinges, and ANSI/BHMA A156.26 2006 American National Standard for Continuous Hinges. These publications are updates of earlier 2000 versions of the standards.
ANSI/BHMA A156.1 covers requirements for lightweight, standard weight, heavy weight and detention hinges, while ANSI/BHMA A156.26 establishes requirements for architectural continuous hinges used in building construction.
Minor editorial changes were made, as were cycle requirements added for electrical hinge wire, to both standards. ANSI/BHMA A156.26 added definitions for tamper resistance and plugs, and modified the numbering system. The standard for Butts and Hinges added salt spray test requirements for clear-coated ferrous hinges and requires slight adjustments to the Friction Test Values and Method.
These standards are useful to architects, engineers, building owners, installation and maintenance personnel and others concerned with the proper operation of butts and hinges, and continuous hinges.
"BHMA has been extremely busy in 2006 updating and developing new standards,” said Mike Tierney, Standards Coordinator for the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association. "We recognize the need to continually enhance our standards and follow the efficient guidelines of the ANSI process in doing so. This process ensures the public’s safety and security when using BHMA certified hardware.”

About BHMA
The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) is an industry leader in building safety and security. BHMA is the only organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for locks, closers, exit devices and other builders hardware. The widely known ANSI/BHMA A156 series of standards describes and establishes the features and criteria for specific types of hardware products. In addition, BHMA sponsors third-party certification of hardware products, which is a requirement for a product to bear the “BHMA Certified” mark — insuring that the product meets the ANSI/BHMA standard.
